January 11, 2006...Bruja
Canyon, Big Bend National Park, Texas
You'll have to buy my book
for the full story on Bruja because my
publisher will kill me if I give every thing
away. But I did make it there this winter,
and it was a thrilling hike. First you come
upon the graves and ruins of Terlinga Abjao,
which made me feel as if I'd just stepped
into a scene of a Clint Eastwood Western.
Then 3 miles of calf-scratching, cross
country hiking brings you to the mouth of
Bruja Canyon.

Bruja Canyon
Bruja means "witch" in
Spanish. Supposedly this canyon is haunted
and people have claimed that photographs of
Bruja can't be developed. But the spooks
must have been on sick leave the day I was
there.
